Star Trek Into Darkness Review

Having heard not-so-good things about the 3-D conversion for the new Star Trek ,I avoided it and now can give you an opinion about the neat 2-D version of the movie. This will be quick as it's not exceptionally hard to do.

Those who know J.J. Abrams know he's pretty much a guy who likes to weave a tale by hitting the ground running, which he does so here quite literally, and thus keeps the momentum going. In that regard it's no different from the first Star Trek film. As the film begins you are thrown into a completely confusing sequence of events full of surprises that manages to sort itself out as it goes allowing you to catch up with Kirk and crew out there running about making a mess of the universe. Kirk still has to earn the right to serve as the Captain of the Star Ship Enterprise, and he's not off to a good start despite his heroics during the events of the previous film. However a series of calamaties once again has him running the show, testing his leadership and ethics and obedience as an enigmatic figure, whom we discover to be Khan, blows up an archive in London, and kills many ranking members of the Federation.

Parallels to terrorism, 9/11, and suspicion of authority are abundant here much as they were in Iron Man 3 such that Kirk finds himself at odds in a 3 way deadlock between Khan, the Federation, and even the Klingon of which he must maneuver his way around carefully, and if anyone knows diplomacy, it's our young Captain Kirk, and by 'diplomacy', I really mean 'youthful rebellion.' And by 'anyone who actually knows diplomacy', I actually meant Spock. You can expect more of this tension between hypothetical swords and shields as even Kirk and Spock's friendship is strained to their limits as they each debate correct courses of action, and judging when to obey the rules and when to break them.

The story is pretty strightforward. Kirk is ordered to find Khan and kill him, and Kirk doesn't have a problem with that given Khan killed someone dear to him. But at the same time, Kirk is suspicious as to whether he's being used, and his friends are there to keep him on the straight and narrow path.

Star Trek Into Darkness is a fun thrilling film with plenty of awesome moments that general audiences will enjoy immensely. However, hardcore Trekky fans may take issue with many things about the film. Obviously one of them being that this movie is more along the lines of an action adventure film with little thought provocation and sci-fi themes that Star Trek fans love about the original universe. Also those who have watched 'Wrath of Khan' will apparently find nothing new of worth here except rethreading the same old territory with some roles switched around. Also to nitpit quite a bit, there are random things thrown about for no good reason other than perhaps comedy, or perhaps to drive home the fact that in case you missed it, Kirk is a womanizer. Also Alice Eve looks very nice in her underwear as many might've long theorized, but now we can verify that scientifically, or maybe you still won't be very impressed, who knows? Kirk certainly isn't picky.

All in all it's an enjoyable film, with very good visual effects and very nice lens flares. Though for me, the first one was better. Still... it's a warp well worth taking. Next we'll see what Abrams can bring to Star Wars!

Japanese Live-Action Kiki's Delivery Service coming!

Japan is making a live action adaptation of Kiki's Delivery Service. More accurately it's adapting the novels, and therefore this is not an adaptation of the Ghibli anime; though no doubt there will be plenty of inspiration taken from it. The anime by Hayao Miyazaki adapted the first novel, while the live action film will cover the first two novels of which there are six in total. Here's the first image of the young actress that will play Kiki - 16-year-old Fūka Koshiba!

The Lost Art of Final Fantasy IX

One dedicated fan who loves to research games has taken the time to collect a lot of original artwork used for the game assets of Final Fantasy IX that never had a chance to be seen outside of its diminished quality visuals that were a limitation of the technology of the time.

"In my research, I unearthed artwork that show a ludicrous level of detail went into the game – detail that never made it into the final product due to the limitations of the target format. The “lost art” referenced in the thread title isn’t meant to describe this content as having been lost and found – it refers to the art details that were lost when the graphics were downconverted to a limited 32-bit console.
The following pieces are the highly-detailed environment art from a selection of Square USA staff. The intense details were eventually downscaled to the 320x240 native resolution of the PlayStation to become pre-rendered in-game backgrounds."

HALO TV Series announced alongside the new Xbox console

A TV Series adaptation of Halo under the supervision of Steven Spielberg was announced at Microsoft's Press Conference unveiling their new next-gen console, the 'Xbox One.' The console was unveiled with a very heavy focus on television, sports and apps with games being promised for E3. No other details were given, but it's a shame we won't get to ever see what Neil Blomkampf could've done.

Quite an amount of controversy has arisen following the event with concerns about consumer rights are being taken away as the Xbone looks to require an always online connection. This checks to see whether you are connected to the Internet every 24 hours in order to work. The console must always be in a stand-by mode in order to utilize the voice controlled features that require their new Kinect peripheral to be installed and calibrated as a mandatory standard feature that opens all kinds of privacy concerns.

But of bigger importance to most consumers are statements that suggest that used games cannot be played on the Xbone unless an appropriate fee is paid or having to go through Microsoft as a middleman if you plan to sell (legally, transfer licences) to somebody else; which also makes it difficult to rent or borrow and lend games too... Details are still being worked out, but many gamers are making a large protest against Microsoft and petitioning their competitor, Sony, not to implement similar DRM strategies on it's recently unveiled PlayStation 4 console.

Golf Party

I had the privilege to throw my Grandpa's surprise 80th birthday party with some wonderful help from family. He loves golf and, he still golfs everyday even though he just turned 80. I say 80 years young, not 80 years old. Boy was he surprised, it was priceless!!

For decorations I made a backdrop for the food table out of 12x12 scrapbook paper and a white tri fold project board I got at Walmart. You just fold the paper accordion style, then fold it in half again. Staple it all together, I used 3 pieces of paper for each big flower and 2 pieces of paper for the smaller ones. I just hot glued them to the board. The ones with 2 flowers together you need a circle in between the flowers to help the glue stick. Then you just need to cut out circles for the center. It is really easy to make just a little time consuming. I used green, black, white and silver color theme. We had 3 different sets of golf clubs around the room too.

Center pieces, my Mom had this great idea. We bought our jars from the Dollar Store and we got the crinkled paper you put in Easter baskets (brown and white) and used that to stuff them. Then we put some golf balls on top with some golf tees. Finish it all off with green and black ribbon and you have some cheap and cute centerpieces. :)

I love Hobby Lobby and they have thicker wrapping paper which is nice to run down the tables for an added decoration and it also helps protect your table cloths. It is nice to just roll everything up and throw it away, it makes for easy clean up!

I made golf term labels for the food table. We had croissant sandwiches so I made one that said "Club Sandwiches". We had the best fruit bowl and it said "Fruit Slice",we had chips so I made "Chip Shots". Water for drinks I made a "Watering hole" tag. Cake table I made a "Caddy Buffet" even though it wasn't candy it was still sweets.

My cousin had a great idea and we had all the great grand kids make him a card so we had a gift and card table.

I had the idea to make a memory jar. We had everyone write down some of their favorite memories they have had with my Grandpa. We just had strips of scrapbook paper for everyone to write one down on. Then he got to take them all home to read later.

One of my cousins made a cute candy poster for him and, her and her boyfriend did a really cute birthday rap for him.

I put a game together with the help of my Grandma that helped us get to know him better. My Grandma came up with 20 questions about him and I put them all in balloons and we made them into 80 and we had all the little kids come up and pop one and I read the question to my Grandpa for him to answer.

I also made a picture slide show for him of his life up to now. I loved watching how much it meant to him. I put it together with music and the music I used for his slide show was.

Abba- take a chance on me (for when him and my grandma were together.)
Alan Jackson- Remember when (for when his kids were little)
Lonestar- let them be little (for when all the grand kids were growing up)
Louise Armstrong- What a wonderful world ( pictures of everyone with him day to day)
Forever Young- (pictures of everyone with him day to day until now)

At the beginning I had one of my cousins read something I wrote about celebrating his birthday.
It all was a great success and I am happy for everyone involved for making it such a great day for him. Enjoy!!
